Art and Computer Programming

July 6th, 2005 2 comments

When I was discovering ONLamp.com I’ve found a quite interesting article “Art and Computer Programming”. The author John Littler asked many famous programmers (Guido van Rossum, the creator of Python, Bjarne Stroustrup, the creator of C++ etc) about can we consider programming like art. It’s funny but I thought about the same question some time ago :) .
Well, as I expected the opinions disjointed. One part told that programming is definitely art, the second part told that programming is just craft and nothing more.
In my mind, the programming is art or craft depending on your work. If you have a hard and detailed direction how something should be implemented this is a craft because that work does not need to creativity. But if you have just idea and you need to build the application or its part according to your knowledge and experience this is art. You cannot say that worker who makes cars does art work. But designer who create that car is artist.
