Linux on laptops

September 28th, 2006 No comments

This brief howto is a right point to start for all who is planning to buy notebook and install there Linux. It’s not secret that Linux doesn’t support some hardware. But this is not a Linux fault. Some producers don’t want to develop drivers or even provide API for their hardware (I guess they have heavy arguments). So, it’d be better to investigate hardware included in the desire laptops. Spend some time before buying and save the time and nerves after.

WELCOME TO THE PRINCIPALITY OF SEALAND

September 26th, 2006 2 comments

SEALAND

This is not a joke. This is a real principality with its own king, currency, passports and stamps:

Sealand was founded as a sovereign Principality in 1967 in international waters, six miles off the eastern shores of Britain. In late June of 2006, the island suffered a devastating fire which destroyed much of the country’s administrative centre and the main power generation facility which serves its population and industries. Fortunately, back-up systems exist which permit its activities to continue but the disaster has compromised significantly the quality of life of its inhabitants and the continued development of the island’s economic and social growth.

It’s amazing. Sometimes even unrealizable dreams come true :)

Managing Standalone Scripts in PHP: part II

September 26th, 2006 No comments

The second article about using standalone PHP script shows amazing ability of PHP such as fork, signals and demonizing. Yes, PHP allows to catch signals like SIGINT, SIGHUP, SIGALRM and so on. It’s really cool! When I develop background utils for SugarCRM I didn’t know about those useful PHP features. So, it’s time to make them more efficient and geek.

WRC Cyprus Rally: Down Town Special

WRC Cyprus Rally
Today we watched a DTS – Down Town Special. We found a place near turn where pilots go to second track. It was amazing! Competion of well-known WRC pilots in the old city! We took a few fotos and made four small video clips:

It was the best stage of the Cyprus rally IMHO! Henning Solberg on his Peugeot 307 WRC gladdened rally fans when he made a 360 degree turn right after start! Peter Solberg drove risky but showy (as usual). I like his style. Sebastien Loeb and Markus Gronholm were careful but they were the best ;)

toggl
Toggl is online service offerred time and meeting tracking. You can keep your working time only or manage your team. It’s possible create unlimited number of projects and users using free basic functionality. You can invite other users in your projectes with the invitation function. Additionally, Toggl offers record meeting agendas, post future meeting dates, and archive past meetings so that the entire team can stay synchronized.
Personally, I use myHours to track my working hours. I like it becaose it has a pretty simple user interface and all functionality which I need. Maybe I’ll try Toggl as well. Who knows probably it’s much better.

Yet another Online Spreadsheet

September 24th, 2006 2 comments

EditGrid is the new kid in the Online Spreadsheet Comunity. It offers whole (almost) set of MS Excel features and more: allows multiple users to work on the same spreadsheet simultaneously, uses web browser as user interface, allows to do export/import in many formats, offers API to use of EditGrid in your application.

Other online spreadsheets:

Here is a comparison matrix between EditGrid, Google Spreadsheet and WikiCalc.

This kind of applications are good and useful for the individuals and small companies. But there is a problem of privacy (I’m talking about services similar Google Spreadsheet). When you store some sensitive information on the server of third part company you should trust it. Or you should be ready that your documents will play against you.

WRC Cyprus Rally

Today I, Maria and our firend Helen were on the special stage 13 Kellaki – Foinikaria of WRC Cyprus Rally. We came to the stage’s begin one our before start. So, we had a time to find a place with good view. How to describe my feeling? Surge of adrenalin, dust, gulp of clear air, again surge of adrenalin and so on … Solberg drove dangerously but amazinly showy! But … Gronholm is still the best!
I took a few shots. They can impart at least small a part of Cyprus Rally spirit!
Tomorrow we are going to be on Down Town Special. Tickets are already bought!
