Terminology

Those terms were found during my study of smart home functionality and I tried to consolidate them in one place. Hope it’ll be useful for you.
Note, this list is not final. It’ll grow right after my diving to smart home area.

• DVB – Digital Video Broadcasting:
  • satellite (DVB-S and DVB-S2)
  • cable (DVB-C)
  • terrestrial television (DVB-T)
  • terrestrial television for handhelds (DVB-H)
• OSD – On-screen display
• EPG – Electronic program guide
• PVR – Personal video recorder.
• DVR – Digital video recorder
• Set-top box – a device that connects to a television and some external source of signal, and turns the signal into content then displayed on the screen.
• Triple play – grouping together Internet access, TV and telephone service into one subscription on a broadband connection.
• VLC aka VLC media player – is a media player from the VideoLAN project.
• DiSEqC – Digital Satellite Equipment Control is a special communication protocol for use between a satellite receiver and a device such as a multi-dish switch or a small dish antenna rotor.
• PES – Packetized Elementary Stream – the first MPEG-2 layer which is dedicated to ensure tight synchronisation between video and audio.
